Wrestlers Gold Medalist Sanderson Drills In Hempfield


Hempfield Area coach Vince DeAugustine equated with Cael Sanderson in a wrestling camp for being Michael Jordan "at a basketball camp.

It was an opportunity to learn from the best.

Sanderson was the guest clinician at the annual State Champ Camp on Wednesday at Hempfield. The camp, under the auspices of DeAugustine 'Animals Wrestling Club, Hempfield, was open to other top wrestlers and grapplers from the area.

Sanderson, an Olympic gold medal in 2004 and four times a NCAA Division I champion who now coaches in the State Penn, under the direction of more than 50 wrestlers.

"Cael was super with the kids," DeAugustine said.

Sanderson went on takedowns and techniques, including famous ankle pick.

"I hope I was able to give some tips to get better," he said. "Being in a camp also allows me to see what great wrestlers there."

Sanderson has shown many of the moves on Penn State 's Jake Kemerer, a two-time PIAA Class AAA champion Hempfield and a consultants from camp. Kemerer said Sanderson is a great teacher.

"You always learn something new from him every day," he said. "The 's a great coach. Teaches many little techniques."

Nico Cortese, who is fighting in Hempfield and now fights at Duke, said he learned a lot from tracking Sanderson work.

"Substance is very good," said Cortese, also a consultant camp. "I 'll try to adapt some of the things taught in my style."

If the wrestlers were old or new, big or small, Sanderson worked with them all. She even got down and drilled with wrestlers, including the Pezze Norwin, Paul Bewak and Nikos Garofola of Hempfield and Jim Gulibon of Derry.

Gulibon, already twice champion PIAA, impressed by Sanderson.

"Pick of the ankle is awesome, and I liked the movement of the double-leg Takedown," he said. "It sa 'funny guy. This is an opportunity to learn from the best, and now I know why he is."

Sanderson, 30, has been wrestling since he was 5. His father was a high school coach, and two brothers also competed.

"All I was trying to teach a little technique to have fun and fire them up for the game," he said. "I am me out here trying to get to know people around the state. This was a very talented team here. Most camps aren t 'like that.

"That was some of the top wrestlers in the country."
