Healthy Eating Can Reduce The Risk Of Colorectal Cancer

June 16, 2010 – Eating a diet rich in fruits and vegetables, low-fat dairy foods, and fish may reduce the risk of colorectal cancer, according to a new study.

Eating healthy in this way reduced the risk of colon cancer by 65% in women and 62% of men, he says. "Because the fish were a part of the protective dietary habits of men only, low-fat diary only in women who are not known at this time," Miller tells WebMD.

The study published in the Journal of Nutrition.

Approximately 147,000 new cases of colorectal cancer diagnosed in 2009 in the U.S., according to the American Cancer Society.

Miller and her team evaluated the diet of 431 men and women with colon cancer and diet of 726 healthy men and women who thought 't have colon cancer.

These are categorized participants in fruit-and how food, vegetables and meat-potato-shaped refined grains. In men, the third model – a diet rich in alcohol and soft drinks – was found.

It examined how well participants followed the 2005 Dietary Guidelines for Americans and MyPyramid recommendations, which suggests a diet rich in fruits, vegetables and whole grains.

Apart from finding the reduced risk of colorectal cancer for people who eat a diet heavy in fruits and vegetables – 62% reduction in risk for men and 65% for women – Miller found that the more closely men and women met the dietary guidelines, the lower the risk of cancer.

Men and women with higher compliance with the guidelines had a lower risk of colon cancer, reducing it by 44% (males) and 56% (women).

advice Miller '; "Rather than focusing on just one food, nutrient or other dietary component, focus on eating a whole plant-based diet that emphasizes fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, seeds, and vegetable oil "he says.

The standard diet is associated with higher risk of cancer in the study included increased consumption of red and processed meat, poultry, fried potatoes and white, high-fat dairy products, desserts, salty snacks, butter, mayonnaise, sauce, pies and refined grains.

This "more data" that a low fat, low meat, high fiber diet is protective, "says Donald David, MD, head of gastroenterology at the City of Hope Cancer Center, Duarte, CALIF., The who reviewed the study for WebMD. ''More work must be done to discover exactly which foods are protective. "

"I think the message of our study for today is establishing a [food is] good for us anyway going to protect us from colon cancer at some point."

Experts speculate that a diet emphasizing fiber-rich fruits, vegetables and whole grains waste moves through the colon more quickly, with harmful substances less time to damage the cells there.

David calls for a total of 65% reduction in risk of colorectal cancer found in the new study "very significant protection."

Diet, he says, is only one factor affecting the risk for colorectal cancer, of course. A history of bowel disease such as ulcerative colitis increases the risk of colorectal cancer, and family history of disease, according to the American Cancer Society.

Smoking is very overweight and excessive alcohol consumption is also associated with higher risk of colorectal cancers.
